The Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC) and the Mexico Salud-Hable Coalition (Salud-Hable) were announced as recipients of the UN Interagency Task Force on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) (UNIATF) Awards 2019 in recognition of their outstanding contribution to multisectoral action in the prevention and control of NCDs and the NCD-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

HCC was awarded thanks to their regional advocacy work towards the 2018 United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCDs. One key initiative was their strategic advocacy campaign that led Heads of Governments in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to adopt a guide with regional advocacy priorities for the HLM Political Declaration, based on the NCD Alliance’s campaign priorities.  “The Healthy Caribbean Coalition is honoured to receive the UNIATF award in recognition of outstanding contribution to achieving NCD-related Sustainable Development Goals.  This award is particularly meaningful to HCC as it celebrates and further validates the vital role of civil society in accelerating national, regional and global action within the context of a multisectoral whole of society response to NCDs.” state Maisha Hutton, Executive Director of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition.

Salud-Hable was recognized on their innovative #VotoSaludable platform (Healthy Vote platform). The Coalition noted that candidates’ manifestos were very weak on promoting healthy environment to prevent and manage NCDs, and their platform served as a tool for civil society mobilization and demand to promote the NCD agenda.  Juan Núñez, Coordinator of the Mexico Salud-Hable Coalition stated “Being nominated is an honour for the Mexico Salud-Hable Coalition.  Our main goal has always been to put NCDs on the map, but above all, to put people first.  Without them at the center, health policies would be incomplete.”

At the UN meeting in New York, the UNIATF also presented the Ministry of Health of Peru with an award in the category for distinguished Ministries, for its work approving and implementing the manual for the nutritional labelling of warnings used for processed foods high in sodium, sugar, fats and trans fats.

The awards were presented in a ceremony organized in New York City during the 74th UN General Assembly week at the UNIATF side events ‘Friends of the Task Force’ on Monday, 23 September 2019, in the UN Building.  Additional information about the awards and the recipients can be found on the NCD Alliance website.
