Declaration of Support for the PAHO/WHO Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents - 53rd PAHO Directing Council, September 29 – October 3, 2014
The 53rd PAHO Directing Council will convene next week on September 29 – October 3, 2014 at the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to discuss the major health challenges facing the countries of the Americas and to set priorities for PAHO/WHO technical cooperation with its Member States. One of the many topics on the agenda is the "Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents" (English) (Español) (Portugués) addressing the serious health threat posed by childhood obesity. The "Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents" provides the rationale and key strategic lines of action for comprehensive public health interventions to halt the progression of the obesity epidemic in children and adolescents.
Obesity among children and adolescents has reached epidemic proportions in the Americas. Even if the causes of this epidemic are complex and more research is needed, much is known about the consequences and actions that must be undertaken to halt it.
