Declaration of Support for the PAHO/WHO Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents - 53rd PAHO Directing Council, September 29 – October 3, 2014


The 53rd PAHO Directing Council will conv53dc flag-enene next week on September 29 – October 3, 2014 at the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to discuss the major health challenges facing the countries of the Americas and to set priorities for PAHO/WHO technical cooperation with its Member States.  One of the many topics on the agenda is the  "Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents" (English) (Español) (Portugués) addressing the serious health threat posed by childhood obesity.  The "Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescentsprovides the rationale and key strategic lines of action for comprehensive public health interventions to halt the progression of the obesity epidemic in children and adolescents.

obesity infantThe InterAmerican Heart Foundation, World Obesity Federation, Consumers International, World Cancer Research Fund International, Public Health Institute, and Healthy Latin America Coalition, have prepared a Declaration of Support Statement (English) (Spanish) for the PAHO/WHO "Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents" that will be read during the 53rd PAHO Directing Council meeting and entered into the meeting minutes.  The statement strongly urges member states to support the "Plan of Action for the prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents" and is signed by numerous civil society organizations.  If you would like to add your name to the list of signatories please contact the IAHF via This email address is being protected from spambots. obesity child male2Obesity among children and adolescents has reached epidemic proportions in the Americas.  Even if the causes of this epidemic are complex and more research is needed, much is known about the consequences and actions that must be undertaken to halt it.
